Guide for K-12 Educators

2019 festival attendees at activity tables

Teachers! Share the 2021 National Math Festival with your students. Sign up for live, free events for all ages from PreK through elementary, middle, and High School. Check out the schedule and plan to stay for an hour or two; drop in on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, April 16-18.

Accessibility: Many events are available in Spanish; ASL interpreters are available to accompany attendees to Sessions and Booths on a first-come, first-served basis. Stage events use live captions and a list of video recordings will be released with official captions in the week(s) following the events.

Moderation & Safety: The NMF Live Online Weekend is a youth-centered environment. Students ages 13 and under should be accompanied by an adult when participating in events. The event does not have open chat; only moderated Q&A at live events. For Friday events, there is no use of video/audio by audience members. For Saturday and Sunday events, audience members are invited to join certain events using video and/or audio to communicate with presenters, but it is not required. The National Math Festival does not tolerate harassment of participants or presenters; see our Welcoming Statement for details.

How to Participate & Share with Your School

The free NMF Live Online Weekend takes place on the Hopin.com events platform. You do not need to download or install any apps or software prior to participating — all you need is a web browser like Chrome or Firefox to access the Hopin website. When you register for the event, you will receive the link to the festival website and any instructions to join in the week before the event.

Hopin allows one person to access the site per email address, so provided below are a few different ways to share and join in the fun:

  • For students and families: Send our Hopin e-Enrollment Kit home with your students containing the links to register. Students ages 13+ can register for the website, or parents/guardians can register and attend with younger children.
  • Teachers: Register yourself through Eventbrite, then use your school's usual video meeting software (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.) to screen share the Hopin event with your students on the day of the event. You can also share the following information in your classroom's parent portal or messaging service.

Copy and paste the following sample message to your classroom portal:

Weekend of April 16-18: Students and their families are invited to join the free, online National Math Festival on the weekend of April 16-18, 2021. This all-ages event can be accessed via a website (no special app required) where you can meet live, on-camera family math fun experts, mathematicians, Mathical Book Prize winning authors, and join activity presenters for dozens of short programs. Register your family for the event at https://tinyurl.com/nmflive2021. Stay for as long or little as you choose, and you can decide if your family wants to be seen on camera or if you prefer to just watch the fun. This is a great chance to see a new side to math beyond our school: play games, talk to real mathematicians, get fun resources from math organizations around the USA, watch films, listen in on short talks about fascinating topics, and more! Programs are appropriate for students in PreK, elementary, middle, and high school, with special events for adults and parents as well. Learn more: www.nationalmathfestival.org.
